The FMHG is used in prosthetic and orthotic clinics, upper-limb fitting centres and rehabilitation services that fit myoelectric prostheses. Its users are people with amputation below or above the elbow, or with a congenital limb difference, who control a powered prosthetic hand with their own muscle signals and want that hand covered in a glove made for them.
Population fit sits at the centre of its use. Myoelectric hand users are often among the most active prosthesis wearers in a service: they use the hand for grasping, carrying and holding through the working day and at home. For them, the glove is part of the hand they use constantly, and having it made to their own dimensions means it follows that particular hand. The long and short versions then let the service match coverage to the person, the short glove for wearers whose socket and clothing cover the forearm, the long glove for those who want the forearm finished as well.
Prosthetists and prosthetic technicians order the FMHG by recording the dimensions of the wearer's myoelectric hand and the chosen length, and Wonderful makes the glove to that record. At the fitting, the glove is drawn over the hand and settled along its length.
Typical uses include finishing a new myoelectric prosthesis before handover, replacing a glove at the end of its service, and changing a wearer's coverage from short to long as their preferences change. In each case the glove follows the dimensions of the hand it covers and the wearer it belongs to.
