What Is N95 Respirator Fit Testing and Why Staff Need ItFit testing is a check that a specific tight-fitting respirator — an N95, FFP2 or FFP3 filtering facepiece, or a reusable half or full mask — forms an adequate seal against an individual wearer's face. Because a tight-fitting respirator only protects if virtually all the air the wearer breathes passes through the filter rather than leaking around the edges, the seal is where protection is won or lost. Faces vary enormously, so a mask that seals on one person may leak badly on another. Its limitation is that it depends on a subjective response and is not suitable for higher-protection full-face respirators.Quantitative fit testing and fit factorQuantitative fit testing measures the seal objectively using an instrument such as a particle-counting device, which compares the particle concentration outside the mask with the concentration sampled from inside it. The ratio is the fit factor — a numerical score for how well the mask seals during the exercises. For disposable filtering facepieces and half masks a fit factor of at least 100 is generally required to pass, rising to 500 for full-face masks. Because it gives a number rather than a yes or no, quantitative testing is more discriminating and is often preferred for FFP3, letting a service compare models and identify the best-sealing option for each member of staff.Fit test versus daily seal checkFit testing and the daily fit (user seal) check are different things and both are needed. A fit test is a formal, periodic assessment of a specific make, model and size on a named individual. A fit check is the quick self-check the wearer performs every single time they don the respirator — adjusting straps and the nose clip, then covering the mask to feel for leaks on inhalation and exhalation. Passing a fit test does not remove the need to fit-check on each use, because straps loosen, weight changes and masks are donned differently from day to day. Beard growth — even a day's stubble along the seal line — prevents a reliable seal, which is why wearers of tight-fitting respirators must be clean-shaven where the mask meets the face. Certain facial features, scarring or the arms of spectacles crossing the seal can also cause failure. Eye protection worn with the respirator, such as a face shield visor, must sit clear of the sealing surface so it does not break the seal. Where a staff member cannot achieve a seal, the answer is not to force the mask but to provide an alternative such as a powered or supplied-air hood that does not depend on a seal. Recognising these limits at the specification stage avoids stocking a model that a large share of staff cannot pass.Who can carry out a fit testFit testing must be done by a competent person who understands the method, the equipment and how to interpret the result. Competence can be demonstrated through the industry Fit2Fit accreditation scheme, and the Health and Safety Executive publishes guidance (INDG479) on how testing should be conducted. A test is only valid for the exact make, model and size tested; changing to a different respirator means a fresh test.
