Researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign have built a new Beacon dialysis wearable. The device targets early detection of dialysis access point failure. Pilot testing with patients in Illinois begins later this year.
The Beacon dialysis wearable uses non-invasive ultrasound technology. It tracks blood flow through the access point that dialysis patients use. When blood flow drops, the system alerts clinicians. That drop can signal an increased risk of access failure.
The device sits on the skin. Patients wear it once a day. Its paired software analyses the gathered data. If issues emerge, the software sends real-time notifications to medical staff.
The Beacon dialysis wearable uses ultrasound at the access site. It does not need external operators. It doesn't require trained ultrasound technicians. That design shift is central.
Auvi Labs is the spinout behind the device. It came out of a med-tech initiative at Carle Illinois and the University of Illinois. Auvi Labs plans to start with local pilot testing. It is preparing the device for regulatory review after that.
Auvi Labs co-founder Dr Richie Li began developing Beacon as part of his Capstone Innovation project at Carle Illinois.
Li said: "Patients were routinely presenting to the emergency department, unclear as to when their fistula had thrombosed, or found in clinic to have nonfunctioning fistulas."
Li added: "The Beacon device was designed as an early detection tool to catch fistula failure far before thrombosis. Our system does the surveillance for the patient. It does not rely on external operators or trained ultrasound technicians to provide flow measurements."
Li set out the target endpoint too.
Li added: "The dream is that more fistulas make it to maturation, fewer patients need indwelling catheters, and there are fewer emergency department visits and more prompt, elective interventions."
Auvi Labs CEO Rishab Veldur framed the moment as a readiness milestone.
Veldur said: "Our technology has matured to the point where it can make a meaningful impact in the real world."
The Beacon dialysis wearable pilot studies will begin at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. The company plans to bring Beacon to market in 2028.
Arteriovenous (AV) fistulas are the preferred vascular access for hemodialysis. But fistulas can fail. Thrombosis is a common trigger. When a fistula clots, patients often turn up in the emergency department. Others discover the issue only at a routine clinic visit.
Losing a working fistula usually means an indwelling catheter. That path adds infection risk. It also delays care. Continuous flow surveillance at home aims to change that pattern.
