The difference is substantial: a cured product means a capital purchase alongside the order, a working window to manage during fitting, extra training, and a piece of mains equipment on the electrical testing schedule. It has moved, and it has moved toward devices like this one. A UK multicentre randomised trial comparing plaster casting with functional bracing in adults with an ankle fracture found casting was not superior, with no statistically significant difference in Olerud Molander ankle score at sixteen weeks. For ankle sprains, which are far higher volume, global consensus supports early mobilisation, functional bracing and structured rehabilitation, with functional treatment consistently producing faster recovery, earlier return to activity and lower recurrence than prolonged immobilisation. A randomised comparison of early mobilisation against ten days of non-weight-bearing plaster found 54 per cent back to full work at day ten against 13 per cent, and less pain at three weeks.

There is, and it deserves stating. A Cochrane review concluded that functional bracing might reduce activity limitation and pain and improve ankle movement, but noted those advantages had to be balanced against an increased incidence of adverse events. Work on early ankle movement after surgery found a reduction in venous thromboembolism but more frequent deep and superficial surgical site infections, fixation failure and need to remove metalwork. Removability is also compliance-dependent by definition: a device the patient can take off is a device some patients will leave off. None of that argues against the category, but it argues for selecting by case rather than adopting by default.

Enough to make the choice a system-level one. More than 120,000 people a year in the UK sustain an ankle fracture, representing around 9 per cent of trauma surgeons' workload, and a threefold increase is projected by 2030 as more older adults stay physically active. Sprains are a substantially larger number again and most do not require radiography at all under the standard decision rule. A device serving the foot and ankle sits in one of the highest-volume streams in urgent care, which makes the per-episode cost and the single patient use position worth establishing early.

It determines whether the patient walks in it or needs crutches, whether a walking surface is required, and it bears on venous thromboembolism risk. Lower limb immobilisation is a recognised VTE risk, and published emergency guidance holds that a patient in a removable device permitted to weight-bear, with no other risk factors, may not need chemical prophylaxis. Ask for the weight-bearing status, the load rating, and whether any sole or walking surface is supplied or sold separately.

Almost certainly, and the sheet does not say. A shell cradling one heel and one sole is side-specific by geometry, so left and right versions will exist unless the design is symmetrical. Confirm it and confirm how the two are labelled, because three size codes then become six stock lines and an order placed on size alone arrives half wrong. On a high-volume urgent care item that error is expensive rather than inconvenient.

A removable device transfers part of the treatment to the patient, and the written instruction set is how that transfer is made safely.

Acute ankle injuries swell markedly and resolve slowly, and the foot is dependent for most of the day. Too tight risks neurovascular compromise and pressure injury over the malleoli and the heel, which are prominent and thinly covered. Too loose lets the foot move within the shell and stops the support doing its job. Ask what range is available and whether it covers the swelling curve.

If single patient use, establish the per-episode cost and the disposal route. If reprocessable, expect a defined decontamination method, a cycle limit, and the straps and buckles to inspect as separate wearing components given how many open-and-close cycles they will see.
