Accurate acuity measurement depends on the target being genuinely sharp, and this is where the focus adjustment earns its place. A projector set at the factory for a nominal distance and then installed at a different throw produces letters with soft edges. At the acuity limit — where the patient is deciding whether they can resolve a letter at all — that softness is indistinguishable from blur originating in the eye, and the recorded acuity is worse than the truth. Practices whose room dimensions do not match a catalogue assumption benefit directly from being able to focus on the screen as installed.
Binocular vision assessment is served by the polarised chart set, the supplied polarised metal screen and the polarised glasses. Optical dissociation lets each eye see part of the image independently, which is what makes heterophoria, fixation disparity and vertical imbalance measurable from the chart. The manufacturer specifies ocular muscle imbalance detection explicitly, and for practices investigating asthenopia, headache and reading difficulty in the screen-working population that capability sits at the centre of the examination rather than at its margins.
Duochrome testing supports refinement of the spherical endpoint and checking of single and binocular vision. Because it relies on the eye's chromatic aberration rather than on patient acuity, it works as an objective cross-check on a subjective result — useful with patients whose responses are inconsistent and in teaching, where a trainee's endpoint can be verified independently.
Room geometry determines practical fit. The 1.5 to 7 metre range covers mirrored six-metre lanes, direct long rooms and short rooms where mirroring is impractical. Two decisions belong at order: the chart variant must be confirmed as carrying optotypes appropriate to UK acuity notation, since the manufacturer's variants differ in letter set and script, and the mounting method — table, optional floor or wall stand, or a projector-rated phoropter arm — should be specified alongside rather than discovered afterwards.
