A projector set at the factory for a nominal distance and then installed at a different throw produces letters with soft edges. At the acuity limit — where the patient is deciding whether they can resolve a letter at all — that softness is indistinguishable from blur originating in the eye, and the recorded acuity is worse than the truth.
